Carved Bench

Carved Bench. (Click on the photo for added detail.)

While we’re in recess I took the opportunity to work on some small projects that have been pending for too long. Like, for example, cutting and assembling my new carbon arrows (and also cutting down my older aluminum ones), and various fixes and installations that needed doing at home. The upshot of this is that I had to postpone this week’s throwback post to today.

This photo is from last year’s visit to Guildford, when we met up with a couple friends at Winkworth arboretum, showing one of the carved benches. I’ve done my share of woodworking, but have not yet tried my hand at carving work. I am always amazed at how one manages to create something not by fitting pieces together, but rather by removing material to reveal something that, to paraphrase Michelangelo, was already there.
