Morning Light on the Dachsteingebirge

Last week I took the tiny Osmo Action with me climbing; we had plans to do a trad multi-pitch route, and I knew even the M5 would be a bit of a bother. The Osmo, on the other hand, can be easily mounted onto my gear sling, taking it out of the way. I took a few photos with it, which proved more difficult than … Continue reading Morning Light on the Dachsteingebirge

Donnerbrunnen

The quiet spell on this blog continues, with some more work travel last week (Padova, Italy, this time). Sadly, I also haven’t been out making photos much, which is something I’d like to change. So, meanwhile, here’s another photo from last year’s visit to Vienna, of the Donnerbrunner in Neuer Markt. For this photo I deliberately focused my attention on one of the figures at … Continue reading Donnerbrunnen

Hochstrahlbrunnen und Denkmal zu Ehren der Soldaten der Sowjetarmee

Things have been a bit quiet here at Muddy Boots, as last week I was in Vienna again, this time for work. It’s not long ago that I visited that beautiful city, at the beginning of autumn last year, and that time I had my camera(s) with me. So perhaps it’s fitting that this week I’m sharing this photo from my earlier visit, of the … Continue reading Hochstrahlbrunnen und Denkmal zu Ehren der Soldaten der Sowjetarmee

Wasenspitze and Silberkarhütte

After completing the Hias Klettersteig we walked over to the Silberkarhütte, an excellently-placed mountain hut at the end of the Silberkar valley, where we stopped for lunch (well, cake, really, but who’s asking?). The hut has its own cable car for transporting supplies, which simplifies things as the nearest road is at least a half-hour walk away. In case you’re wondering, the Wasenspitze is the … Continue reading Wasenspitze and Silberkarhütte

Silberkarklamm

One really dramatic outing that we did in the Austrian alps involved a couple of routes in the Silberkar gorge. The area is privately owned, and the family charges an entrance fee, which is used to maintain the walking paths and via ferratas. From the parking area, after passing by the ticket office, well maintained paths lead up the gorge, by the Silberkarklamm river. The … Continue reading Silberkarklamm

Friedenskircherl am Stoderzinken

Starting this week with another photo from the epic Via Ferrata on the Stoderzinken mountain. This one, however, looks back towards our starting point at the Friedenskircherl, a tiny chapel on the side of the mountain. You can clearly see the chapel in this photo, with a few people enjoying the view from there. At this point we were a bit further up the mountain, … Continue reading Friedenskircherl am Stoderzinken

Peter Klettersteig

Undoubtedly, the highlight of our visit to Austria was the last day of our Via Ferrata course, when we tackled “Peter“, a very atmospheric 420m grade C route on the Stoderzinken mountain. Our guide Jef left the best for last, and while the route wasn’t technically hard, it had a great sense of exposure and scenery. After an early morning solo photo outing, the day … Continue reading Peter Klettersteig
